Modernize a business

Modernizing is not replacing everything.

Most established companies do not need to be rebuilt. They need four or five specific things brought up to date, in an order that does not disrupt the work while it happens.

The business runs well and looks like it did in 2014. Customers ask questions the website should have answered, and your team keeps a spreadsheet because the system cannot do it.

What does it mean to modernize a business?

Modernizing a business means updating the parts that customers and employees actually touch — brand, website, search presence, the systems people work in and the processes around them — without replacing the parts that work. It is usually sequenced over months rather than done at once, because an established company cannot stop operating while it is changed.

What is usually actually wrong

  • Systems were adopted one at a time over a decade and were never made to work together.
  • The website was correct when it launched and has quietly stopped describing the business.
  • Processes accumulated steps and nobody has had permission to remove any.
  • The brand grew inconsistent because there were never any standards to be consistent with.

How we approach it

  1. 01Start with what customers see, because that is where the cost of being out of date is highest.
  2. 02Audit the stack before buying anything — some of what is missing is already owned and switched off.
  3. 03Sequence the changes so the business keeps operating throughout.
  4. 04Leave alone what works. Not everything old is broken.

What changes

  • A brand and website that describe the company as it is now.

  • Systems that talk to each other instead of being bridged by a person.

  • Processes with the accumulated steps removed.

Questions

The ones that come up every time.

Do we have to change everything?

No, and being told you do is a reason to be suspicious. Most modernization is four or five specific things. The audit exists partly to establish what should be left alone.

Will this disrupt our operations?

Some of it will, briefly, and the sequencing exists to control that. Anything touching how work is recorded gets planned around your actual calendar, not ours.

Our team resists change. How do you handle that?

Usually by taking it seriously rather than managing around it. People who have watched three systems get replaced badly are not being difficult — they are being empirical. Fixing something they hate, early and visibly, buys more cooperation than any announcement.

You don’t need another vendor. You need a company that understands the whole company.
