Electrical

The schedule is not yours. It belongs to the inspector.

Electrical work is gated by permits, inspections and licensing in a way most trades are not, and any operational plan that ignores those gates is a plan for a schedule that slips.

What operational problems are specific to electrical contractors?

Electrical contracting is gated by external parties: permits have to be pulled before work starts and inspections have to pass before it can be closed out and invoiced, so cash flow is partly controlled by a municipality. Add licensed-labor constraints that cap how fast you can grow, a residential/commercial split that behaves like two different businesses, and new demand from panel upgrades and EV charging that most companies are not structured to quote quickly.

What is actually true here

  • Permits and inspections sit between finished work and a paid invoice. A job can be physically complete and financially stuck for two weeks, and that gap is invisible in most reporting.
  • Licensed labor is the growth ceiling. You cannot hire your way out of a backlog as fast as demand arrives, because the license takes years and the apprenticeship pipeline is a multi-year commitment.
  • Residential and commercial behave like two different companies sharing a logo — different sales cycles, different billing, different customers, and frequently different crews who should not be swapped casually.
  • Panel upgrades, service changes and EV charging are genuinely new demand. The companies capturing it are the ones that can quote it same-day rather than "getting someone out next week".
  • Low-voltage and the trade proper often sit in the same business with completely different margins, and the blended number hides which one is carrying the other.

Systems this trade actually runs

  • Field service platforms, with permit status as a real job stage
  • Permit and inspection tracking against the jurisdictions you work in
  • License and certification tracking per technician
  • Estimating for panel, service and EV work
  • Commercial billing — progress, retainage and AIA where it applies
  • Call tracking and scheduling

What goes wrong, over and over

  • Completed work waiting on an inspection nobody is chasing, with the invoice waiting behind it.
  • Permit status living in one person’s head or a shared spreadsheet rather than as a stage on the job.
  • Quotes for panel and EV work that take days, in a market where the first quote frequently wins.
  • Residential and commercial blended in reporting, so nobody can see which one actually makes money.
  • Technician certifications expiring unnoticed until a job cannot be legally staffed.
Every one of these sits at a handoff — between two systems, or between the field and the office. That is not a coincidence, and it is where we start looking.
